Death figures during Thingyan festival announced

The recently concluded New Year Thingyan Festival saw 32 dead and 190 injured, as well as 177 criminal cases, the state-owned Myanmar Radio and Television (MRTV) reported on April 19.

The water festival, which stretched from April 13 to 16, also claimed 15 deaths during fights. There were a total of 56 fights reported. Also, 22 car accidents resulted in 14 deaths. Three murder cases were reported, too.

The figure was still below those of criminal activities occurred last year, reportedly due to increased security measures taken as prevention against major crimes.
At least 3000 police officers were deployed during this year festival.

When possible fights were reported, police searched and took away the weapons people would use in arguments, officials said.

Drunken drivers were punished in accord with laws and police controlled the security of the pavilions.
