The renovation of former Ministry of Energy office on Yangon's Pyay Road as part of the Yangon General Hospital has been completed, Yangon General Hospital's Medical Superintendent Dr Kyaw Kyaw said.

The specialist departments of renal medical, hepatology, chest medical, and rheumatology will be relocated to the 500-bed hospital, according to Dr Kyaw Kyaw.

He said it is very important to continuously treat current patients and run teaching programmes while upgrading and renovating the Yangon General Hospital.

"We need to establish extension wards on the site of the former Ministry of Health office between the Institute of Nursing and the New Yangon General Hospital. We're not building a new hospital. We need to relocate the patients from the old wards to those places and renovate the main wards," he said.

The extension of the new hospital will help reduce the overcapacity at the 1500-bed Yangon General Hospital, where patients from not only Yangon Region but also other regional areas seek medical treatments.

The Yangon General Hospital was built in 1905 at the site of a former open-air market and was completed in 1911.

The hospital only uses 1,350 beds although it has a capacity of 1,500 beds. It consists of 25 specialist departments for inpatient care and seven emergency departments.
