Myanmar's Lower House Parliamentary speaker has dismissed the news that the Parliament and government were in disagreement.
Speaker Thura Shwe Mann who is also chairman of the ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party, rebutted the news saying it was just rumour. Parliament and government are only shouldering their duties by ensuring checks and balances, he said during the third-day parliamentary session held on Thursday.
"Rumour has it that we are in disagreement and we have different views and opinions. Actually, the Parliament is carrying out parliamentary affairs while the government is engaging in administrative affairs. In doing so, what we have to do is to ensure checks and balances between us. Otherwise, it can contradict the constitutional provisions, causing disagreement over our respective tasks," Shwe Mann said.
The ruling Union Solidarity and Development Party Vice Chairman Htay Oo also refuted the rumour about personal disagreement between Shwe Mann and President Thein Sein during a press conference of the party's central committee meeting on June 22.
"Our chairman (Shwe Mann) and president have good relationship. They sometimes meet personally and talk with each other," Htay Oo said.
