Thailand low-cost carrier NOK Air announced yesterday that it was ready to open direct flights between Mawlamyaing and Maesot starting September 1.
"We arrived to Mawlamyaing last week and chose the place to base the office. We appointed staff and gave training. The office will be opened on July or August. The ticket price will be about US$60," said Htay Naing, a local representative of NOK Air.
Travellers will have to apply for visas themselves or via agencies. Many tour agencies are planning to start their business in Mawlamyaing while Mae Sot, based on the Thai-Myanmar border, is home to thousands of Myanmar workers.
The airport authorities are planning to upgrade Mawlamyaing Airport such as extending the length of runway and constructing fence around the airport, according to local sources.
"X-rays sensors will be installed in July and other renovations will be done," said Soe Paing, an airport official.
