MYANMAR TURNS THAILAND DOWN ON WHITE ELEPHANT LOAN

Myanmar government has turned down the Thailand's proposed loan of one of the white elephants kept in Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw to mark 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties, the Nation reported.

Thai foreign minister Surapong Tovichukchaikul made the request to his Myanmar counterpart Wunna Maung Lwin to keep the "auspicious" white elephant in Chiang Mai Zoo.

A press statement on Myanmar president office's web site reads, "The Myanmar foreign minister told Surapong it would be difficult to transport the white elephant to Chiang Mai. "

But the government of Myanmar instead offers the special flights for Thai people who wants to visit the white elephants in the statement.
