Myanmar has inched closer to put the controversial publication law that requires press licensing following the nod of the parliament.
The lower house has passed the law in the previous week amid fierce criticisms from the field journalists.
The law is said to lend a new life to oppressive censorship law imposed in 1962.
The law requires any publishers, print or online, to apply for licenses and carries possible seven-year prison terms for those who fail to comply with the law.
The law is also criticized for elastic wordings and terms.
Myanmar Journalists Council, an independent body of journalists, which is drafting the new media law criticized the attempt of the information ministry to enact the law Friday.
The council and the ministry have an agreement to put forward the two legislations to the parliament simultaneously.
The council said in its announcement that the law does not feature the provisions suggested by the council and agreed by the ministry to include in it.
Myanmar Journalists Network also issued a press release saying it disapproved the legislation.
