The construction of Myanmar's new Hanthawady International Airport will start in December and is said to be finished within four years.
The airport will be the biggest international airport in the country and is being designed by Korea's Incheon Airport Consortium (IAC) who recently won a tender to construct the project.
The design will emulate the Myanmar's Ayeyarwaddy River flowing from its tributaries. The IAC has agreed to finish the first phase of the construction in December 2017. The first phase will include the airport building which will serve and initial 12 million passengers per year and other aviation services.
In second phase, the IAC will construct another airport building which can serve 30 million passengers per year as well as hotels, shopping malls and apartments. The airport will have a 7,000 tons capacity warehouse to handle goods annually.
"The airport will be used as the main international airport for Myanmar and in the future, international airlines currently flying to Yangon International Airport will be shifted to the newly built airport," said Win Swe Tun, Deputy Director-General of Department of Civil Aviation (DCA).
The airport will have a runway which can land the Airbus A380, currently the world biggest airplane, as well as handle up to 60 other aircrafts.
