Country needs to strive for more skilled workers

Myanmar's population is over 60 million and 32 million are working force but 70 per cent are unskilled laborers, according to Deputy Minister Htin Aung of the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security.

He made the remarks at the workshop on development of Myanmar workers that was held at Myanmar Info Tech on August 1.

"When foreign investments come to Myanmar, we have to nurture our workers to be semi-skilled and skilled-workers as our workers are unskilled. We need to raise their potentials. The vocational training centers for unskilled workers are needed to open to become skilled workers because in 2015 free flow of skilled workers in ASEAN region will appear. In my opinion, testing centers are needed to establish and to give certificates," the Deputy Minister said.

At present, there are many sectors such as oil and natural gas, electrics, mineral, production, garment, hotels and tourism, livestock and breeding, transportation, communication and construction sectors by foreign investments and so the need for the skilled workers may rise in the future, he added.
