YANGON TO START BUS RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT THIS YEAR

Yangon Region government will start Bus Rapid Transit project this
year after inviting bids from interested companies to implement the
project, the Daily Eleven reported, citing a local government
minister.



Yangon Region government minister for road transportation Aung Khin
said the bids would be invited from companies this year for Bus Rapid
Transit system in Yangon.


The increased traffic in Yangon which is partly caused by changes in
car import policies since two years ago deteriorated the traffic
congestions in Yangon.



The local government would seek advices and approval from the central
government for the project. A technical support team have been formed
with Yangon City Development Committee, the governing body of
municipal affairs in the commercial city under the Yangon mayor, bus
lines and other organizations.



The minister guaranteed that the local government would provide
necessary gas supply for the buses to keep the fare charges low.



"We'll try to start the project this year," he told the Daily Eleven.



The system will make its trial run on Pyay road taking is advantage of
its width. The further decisions would be made on the success of the
test run. But the report did not mention the period of the test run.
