Myanmar police arrested 44 people including some members of Rakhine
National Democratic Party as the renewed violence killed five and
injured several others in troubled western corner of the country.
Some Muslims were also detained in connection with the violence.
The sectarian violence coincided with the first visit of Myanmar
president Thein Sein to the western state after the violence broke out
in 2012.
Lawmaker Myint Hlaing of Thandwe said nearly 100 homes had been
destroyed and investigation into the cause of the violence is
underway, according to an LA Times report.
As the international pressure mounts, the Myanmar government made
prompt arrests to prevent further violence in the region and restored
calm.
"The situation is more calm now, there are police and members of the
military in the village areas," Thandwe's Muslim resident Kyaw Naing
Min told WSJ.
