Digicel, Ooredoo sign Myanmar deal to construct telecommunications towers

YANGON—Digicel Asian Holdings, a consortium of Digicel Group, Yoma Strategic and First Myanmar Investment Co Ltd (FMI), announced today that its has signed an agreement with Ooredoo Myanmar to develop, construct and lease telecommunications towers in Myanmar.
Digicel's Myanmar unit, Myanmar Tower Company, will be among the first telecommunications tower companies to begin construction in the Southeast Asian country. Through its multi-tenancy towers, it will help all telecommunications operating firms achieve their aim of rapidly deploying telecommunications coverage across the country, according to Digicel Group.
"We are delighted to work with Ooredoo to help develop a high quality telecommunications network across Myanmar, contribute to the growth of the Myanmar economy and benefit Myanmar citizens across all of the country's states, regions and Union territories," said Denis O'Brien, chairman of Digicel Group.
"Today's announcement is a significant step in the economic and social development of Myanmar. We are delighted to play our part in such development and look forward to working closely with the government, authorities, telecommunications operators and other local companies," said Serge Pun, chairman of Yoma Strategic and FMI.
Qatar's Ooredoo is one of the two international telecommunication providers that earlier this year won the coveted telecom tenders to operate in Myanmar, along with Norway's Telenor. The licences, expected in September, have not been formally awarded yet. After receiving the licence, Ooredoo can operate for 15 years in Myanmar alongside Telenor, state-owned Myanmar Posts and Telecommunication (MPT), and Yatanarpon Teleport (YTP).
