BBC to face £1million racism lawsuit

An Indian-born actress is likely to sue the BBC with up to £1million, reports The Daily Mail online

After the "Top Gear" host Jeremy Clarkson allegedly made racist remarks during the series finale, the Indian-born actress Somi Guha, 36, is said to have consulted with lawyers to file a defamation lawsuit against the show.

Top Gear is a BBC initiative broadcasting a wry look at the motoring world with car news, reviews and test track challenges anchored by Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May.

After the show host Clarkson used the term 'slope' - a derogatory term for people of Asian descent - in the Top Gear Burma special, Guha instructed lawyers to file the lawsuit.

Guha claimed that broadcasting Clarkson's comment amounts to unlawful discrimination by a public figure.

Guha's lawyers, Equal Justice, claimed that the action could cost the BBC £1million in punitive damages under equality laws unless the responsible authority apologizes and takes the hit motoring show off the air.

"She is one of the groups who were offended by the term - and so sought legal advice from the firm, who previously worked on racism allegations surrounding reality show Celebrity Big Brother," the lawyers said.

A BBC spokeswoman for Top Gear said the corporation had no comments on Miss Guha's action.
