The Chindwin River has reached dangerously low levels near Monywa Township as the cargo boats struggle to navigate sand banks and other obstacles.

"At the moment, the cargo boats are in great difficulty. As the water becomes narrow, the boats have to wait for one another," said a boat owner Phoe Aung.

On April 24, Chindwin River water measured a mere 56 centimetres around Monywa, as hot season reaches mid-40 temperatures in most of central Myanmar.

It can be like this until the end of April according to the Meteorology and Hydrology Department. The Chindwin River recorded its lowest ever level of 18 centimetres in March 31 of 2010.

"It takes more time to reach destinations. We have to reduce the cargo as it can really overload. Fees for the cargos have also increased," said another motor owner.
