Myanmar ethnic Rakhine national conference kicks off in Kyaukphyu


YANGON, April 27 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar's ethnic Rakhine National Conference kicked off in the state's coastal township of Kyaukphyu Sunday to seek solution of issues including communal conflicts and violence challenging the state.

The five-day Rakhine national conference, involving the mass of the ethnic people, will top the discussions on Rakhine national's peace, security and development and an outcome on settlement of the challenges, agreed by participants, is expected.

Six papers related to the Rakhine state are to be presented for discussion at the Rakhine national conference, which including those dealing with national consolidation, national equality and self-promulgation, peace and security, economy, education, development, health and humanitarian assistance, according to local sources.

Participants at the conference were government officials, leaders of Rakhine National Party, Rakhine ethnic Army, social organizations from the state and Kyaukphyu local residents totaling about 1,000.

Deadly communal violence broke out in Rakhine state in mid-2012, in which a total of 167 people were killed and 223 others injured. A total of 10,100 houses and buildings were razed, displacing 111, 000 people from 16,980 households.

In the latest development, riot broke out again on March 26 to 27 of 2014, targeting offices and residences of international aid groups, in which a number of Sittway-based offices of international aid groups, including a number of UN agencies, were attacked.
