Military will be at forefront of national reconciliation efforts, Suu Kyi says

Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi said she believes that the military will be in the front line of national reconciliation efforts side by side with the people.

She was talking to a civil society at a mass meeting in Taungdwingyi on December 8.

She said she would continue her national reconciliation efforts with her conviction.

She also showed her stance on the armed forces and servicemen.

"Our country has been ruled by the military regime for decades. This is why some people have no clear conscience about the military. They view servicemen as oppressive ones," Suu Kyi said.

"But I don't think so. I don't like some actions the military has done. But I have always shown loving-kindness to them. It is because my father founded the armed forces. I assume it was conceived as morally good. So they (servicemen) can mend their character and behavior. I trust the people as well as the military," she added.

"One day, I believe, the military will play a key role in national reconciliation efforts together with the people. With this belief, I will continue my duties and responsibilities," she said.

Public support will also guarantee a success in national development endeavours, Suu Kyi commented.
