Pathein University's marine science department has asked the
government to designate specific areas for study of mangrove forests,
according to Kamayut Media report.
Dr Khin Maung Cho of the department said climate change and increased
possibility of cyclones and Indian Ocean prompted the need to study
the mangrove forests in delta areas of the country.
The area was hit by deadly cyclone Nargis in 2008 and tens of
thousands of people were killed in the cyclone.
The study is be supported by Norway-based Wordview International and
Worldview Myanmar.
The university has been conducting the research along the coastline
since 2012 to develop a model to conserve the mangrove forests along
the coast.
The coastal areas in Myanmar are often hit by cyclones which started
in Indian Ocean.
